In insert mode, new characters push existing text to the right. In overwrite mode, new characters replace existing text at the cursor position.

Most applications default to insert mode. The Insert key traditionally toggles between modes, and the cursor shape often changes (bar for insert, block for overwrite) to indicate which mode is active.
